Hindu Marriage as a sacrament

June 12, 2023

Hindus thus saw marriage as a relationship that was primarily intended to carry out religious and spiritual tasks. Without the carrying out of religious rites and ceremonies, such a marriage cannot take place. A sacramental union also suggests that it is a long-term union. Marriage is a tie that can never be broken.

It follows that a marriage cannot be ended. Lastly, because marriage is a sacramental union, the relationship is eternal and valid for all lives, not just this one. In the uncodified hindu law since the marriage was considered an eternal union hence there were no grounds for divorce.
