They appeared at the same time as the commentaries and digest era. The Mitakshara school and the Dayabhaga school are the two primary schools of Hindu law. The commentary on the Yajnavalkya Smriti by Vijnaneshwara is responsible for the Mitakshara school’s name. Jimutavahana’s summary on renowned Smritis by the name of Dayabhaga is responsible for the founding of the Dayabhaga school.

 Other than Bengal and Assam, the Mitakshara school is dominant in all of India. In Bengal and Assam, the Dayabhaga school is dominant. The Mitakshara school has four sub-schools, Benaras (Northern and North-West), Bombay (Western), Mithila (Bihar), and Dravida or Madras school (South India), but the Dayabhaga school has none.
