Smriti literally translates to “what has been remembered.” Smritis are founded on the recollections of the wise men who held the divine Scripture in trust. In the early Vedic era when not everything was compiled what sages got to remember from their remembrance was termed as smriti and hence was compiled which later became the source as a scripture selling the ways to live a life and all the divine rules related to it.
Early Smritis and later Smirties are two categories for the Smritis. The earlier are referred to as Dharmasutras, whereas the latter are known as Dharmashastras.
