NATO, which stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a political and military alliance of independent countries that was established on April 4, 1949. Its primary purpose is to provide collective defense against aggression and to promote security and stability in the North Atlantic area. NATO was initially founded with 12 member countries: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The core principle of NATO, as outlined in its founding treaty, is Article 5, which states that an armed attack against one or more of its members is considered an attack against all members. In the event of such an attack, each member is obligated to come to the aid of the attacked member.
