ASEAN, which stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, is a regional intergovernmental organization in Southeast Asia. It was established on August 8, 1967, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (also known as the Bangkok Declaration). ASEAN’s primary goal is to promote peace, stability, economic growth, and cooperation among its member states. ASEAN operates based on several key principles, often referred to as the “ASEAN Way,” which include non-interference in the internal affairs of member states, consensus-based decision-making, and peaceful conflict resolution. These principles are intended to foster cooperation and prevent conflicts within the region.
The EAS is a forum for leaders from ASEAN and several other countries, including the United States, China, Russia, India, Australia, and New Zealand. It addresses strategic and geopolitical issues in the Asia-Pacific region. ASEAN continues to adapt to changing regional and global dynamics. Its future agenda includes addressing economic challenges, promoting sustainable development, and maintaining its central role in regional diplomacy.
