What is FIR?

The police officer receives knowledge regarding the cognizable offence. The term “First Information” is given to the information and “First Information Report” refer to the report of that fact . Though the word FIR is not mentioned under section 154 it still means the same.

 It relates to the cognizable offence that is used to process the criminal case, it is regarded as one of the most significant documents. The criminal case begins to be investigated after the filing of the FIR.

Anyone who has knowledge of the crime, whether they are a victim, a witness, or both, may file a FIR.

The process for filing a FIR is specified in section 154 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973. If the information is provided orally, the police must record it in the register and have the person giving the information sign it.
