The Examination

CLAT :
Exam and pattern

The common law admission test (CLAT) is organised by the consortium of National law Universities for both undergraduates as well postgraduates.
The CLAT-UG examination can be given by anyone from any school after their class 12.
There are 22 National law University (NLU) that are part of the consortium. They are the most premier law schools in India.

The exam is based upon evaluation of the general intelligence of a student. Most of the questions in the examination is based upon general comprehension as well as reasoning ability. (Other than questions of general knowledge).

The exam demands a comprehensive practice by the students on their skills such as reading comprehension as well as questions based on their reasoning ability.

No prior knowledge of law is required for the examination.

Pattern of the Exam :

• 150 MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions)
• Time: 2 hours
• One mark for each correct answer
• There is negative marking of 0.25 for each wrong answer.
• Offline Exam (taken on an OMR sheet)
• Medium of Examination: ENGLISH
• 5 Sections (English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Techniques)

Subjects

• English ~ 20 percent of the paper
• Current Affairs including general knowledge ~ 25 Percent of the paper
• Legal reasoning ~ 25 percent of the paper
• Logical reasoning ~ 20 percent of the paper
• Quantitative Techniques ~ 10 percent of the paper.

Passage Based questions :
In the four sections other than quantitative techniques the students sha be provided a passage about 450 words and then the students shall be asked questions about that particular passage.
The passages would be any topic from fiction to non-fiction depending upon the choice of the examiner.

Quantitative techniques :
In this the students shall be presented with graphs, short set of facts, pictorial representation among others and then the students shall be asked to solve the questions based upon their knowledge of mathematics.
